Fishing Report 28th February 2025
Moruya River.
The whole system has been fishing really well this week, from the lower reaches around Shelly beach and the spur wall all the way up past Yarragee bend, flathead, bream, trevally, estuary perch and whiting have all been on the cards.
So let’s start at the finish and work our way upstream. The airport flats, spur wall and the Preddy’s area have all been holding the usual estuary species. Bream, flathead and whiting have been the main captures, with the hole in the wall fishing particularly well on both a rising and falling tide. Getting in over the flats on a rising tide has produced all of the above mentioned species. While fishing the actual gap on a run out tide has also added a few trevally to the capture list.
Heading upstream, the Garlandtown flats, quarry wharf, entrance to Malabar creek, and the town bridge have all been holding some nice fish as well.
Whilst further upstream, in front of the hospital and the Yarragee bend have also produced some nice fish. Baits or lures, it’s your choice, as they have all been working this week.
Tuross River.
With a new moon tonight, Coila lake should have some prawns for those that like a feed. Try down towards where the mouth usually opens for your best chance at success. We have several prawn lighting option in store and both scoop and drag net options.
The lake proper, is fishing in a similar manner to Moruya this week. With the mighty mulloway a more frequent occurrence than Moruya. Try the deeper holes with either live or fresh baits of mullet or squid, or try some plastics for the lure fishos.
There are also plenty of flathead, bream, Luderick, estuary perch and whiting on offer for those that know where to look.
Rock and beach.
There have been some excellent salmon, bream, trevally and even a few bonito taken from the local ledges and even the Moruya breakwall this week. While the beaches have been holding bream, whiting and good numbers of salmon also. I am hoping to find some Bonnie’s over the next few weeks.
Offshore.
The artificial reef has been holding some snapper and Mahi Mahi this week, fingers crossed they hang around, but the chances of that are slim, particularly with the Mahi Mahi. Snapper have been hanging as little as 25-30m of water this week with plenty of flathead around the local reefs over the sand.
I haven’t heard too much of anything in regards to what is happening out wide this week, so I can’t comment on the game fishing this week.
The bait freezer is still missing worms and mullet fillet this week. We are however well stocked on hawksbury prawns. The shop is pretty well stocked at the moment, and we do have two new additions coming soon to the store. Check our social media posts for one, the other you will have to wait for.
I will be on leave for 3 weeks from next Monday, so will be doing plenty of fishing camping and general recharging. I will be still doing a weekly Friday report however, so you won’t miss out on the happenings fish wise. David will be covering the weekdays hours and Graham and our two juniors will doing the weekend shifts.
Stay safe everyone and remember, “ Every day’s a good day for fishing…”
